Introducing the Academy’s Upcycling Program to Benefit The Actuarial Foundation

Have you recently upgraded any of your consumer electronics? You can help support math education and financial literacy while also helping the environment by upcycling your old devices to support the work of The Actuarial Foundation.
Upcycling is reusing, and it also helps keep electronics out of landfills. We invite you to help us kick off our new initiative this fall.
The upcycling process is 100 percent secure with unrecoverable data destruction. Our first effort is aimed at collecting recently retired phones after you remove any password protection and disconnect from your cloud account. (Click here for further instruction on how to do this for your iPhone or Android.)
If you’re attending the upcoming Society of Actuaries Annual Meeting, Oct. 15–17 in Boston, bring any of the phones below you’re ready to discard, and we will have a bin and tax-deduction forms available at the Academy’s booth.
We will also be at the upcoming annual meetings of the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society.
Naturally, you may also donate your items in person at the Academy’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 14–15. Register here.

At the upcoming conferences, we will be accepting the following mobile devices:
- iPhones: 6, 6S, 7, 7S, and 8
- Samsung Galaxy: S6, S7, and S8, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S8 Plus
- LG: G6, V30, and V20
- Motorola: E4, G5, and Z2 Play
What is upcycling?
Upcycling of old electronics extends the device’s useful life and keeps electronics out of landfills. This program allows us to channel your tax-deductible gift into a charitable donation for The Actuarial Foundation. All data on your device will be erased before it is upcycled.
REMEMBER: Before donating, it is important that you remove any password protection and disconnect from your cloud account. If this isn’t done, the device can only be recycled, not upcycled, and the value of the device will be minimal. Click here for further instruction on how to do this for your iPhone or Android.
In the next few months, we’ll roll out more information about how to upcycle throughout the year in support of the Academy’s program to increase charitable contributions to The Actuarial Foundation.
Many thanks,
Bob Beuerlein
President, American Academy of Actuaries
