Website: New Postings

  • The Academy has published two voters’ guides to help voters better understand the long-term financial challenges facing Medicare and Social Security. Read what to ask candidates—and how to evaluate their answers—about proposals for reforming these programs. The guides are part of the Academy’s Campaign 2012 Toolkits.   • The Pension Practice Council published a new issue brief examining the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation premium structure.
  • The Federal Long-Term Care Task Force sent a letter to the National Conference of Insurance Legislators in response to a request for information on strategies to reduce costs related to long-term care coverage.
  • The Financial Soundness/Risk Management Committee submitted a proposed amendment to the NAIC Life Actuarial Task Force recommending the addition of a Principle-based Reserving Review and Updating Process to VM-00.
  • A profession-wide task force has been created to examine the functions carried out on behalf of the profession by the U.S.-based actuarial organizations and the pros and cons of various organizational structures.

  • With this week’s release of the Social Security and Medicare trustees’ reports, the Academy formally released its voters’ guides for the two programs to the public via media and Twitter.

Media Coverage

  • A letter penned by Academy leaders John Morris and Tom Wildsmith was the subject of an April 25 LifeHealthPro story. Addressed to state insurance committee chairs and insurance commissioners, the letter recommends a definition for “qualified actuary” as referenced in the Affordable Care Act.
