Actuaries Set to Discuss Financial Condition of Medicare and Social Security

What: The American Academy of Actuaries Medicare and Social Security experts will be standing by to offer an actuarial perspective after the programs’ trustees release their 2011 annual reports.

The Academy encourages policymakers to address both programs’ financial issues. Regarding Medicare, the actuaries believe that efforts to resolve its solvency and sustainability concerns should focus on reducing long-term medical care spending growth and have just released a brief [2]that outlines various options. Regarding Social Security, the actuaries believe that the program’s financial challenges should be addressed immediately and that an increase in the retirement age [3] should be included as part of any reform effort.
