On Sept. 4, 2018, the Academy’s Board of Directors, after careful deliberation, voted to amend the Academy’s Bylaws to change the composition of the Academy’s Selection Committee. This committee is established by the Academy Bylaws and appoints members of the Actuarial Standards Board (ASB) and the Actuarial Board for Counseling and Discipline (ABCD), both of which are housed within the Academy. Effective immediately, the Selection Committee will be composed only of the presidents and presidents-elect of the Academy, the Society of Actuaries, and the Casualty Actuarial Society. The Casualty Practice Council’s Travel Insurance Task Force published a monograph, Travel Insurance: An Actuarial Perspective, which provides information on the manner in which travel insurance is designed, filed, priced, sold, and serviced. Read the news release (September 05, 2018)

In the September/October Contingencies, the cover story, “A Policy for Fluffy,” explores pet insurance, which currently occupies only a relatively small niche of the marketplace—but many observers believe it’s poised for big growth in the United States. Other features include “Flu Review”—Just in time for flu season, a brief history and analysis of influenza risk, and how actuaries fit into insurance companies’ strategic plans to deal with outbreaks; and “Taking Aim”—Actuarial professionalism and the challenge of engagement. Academy Past President Mary D. Miller on Friday submitted a comment letter from the Academy to the NAIC regarding the Casualty Actuarial and Statistical Task Force’s exposure draft related to the three-year experience requirement to sign statutory statements. In those comments Miller shared the Academy’s view that the exposure draft describes an approach that will neither clarify nor improve the current requirement. Academy Senior Health Fellow Cori Uccello commented on the final rule released today by the administration on short-term, limited-duration insurance. Uccello noted that higher Affordable Care Act premiums will result if younger and healthier individuals move away from ACA-compliant coverage and opt for STLDI. Read the news release. With the fall 2017 data, the five-year moving average of the Actuaries Climate Index reached 1.19, a new record. The seasonal Actuaries Climate Index value increased to 2.00 in fall 2017, from the previous level of 1.59. Read the news release. (August 01, 2018)
