Academy Election News

  • Watch your email on Monday for your link to cast your ballot for Academy Regular Director candidates. Members will receive an email invitation on July 23, with their unique link to cast an online ballot for the 2012 candidates for three open positions on the Academy of Board of Directors. The email will come from email address noreply@directvote.net; please add this address to your “safe sender” list.
  • Read the responses from each of the candidates for the three open Regular Director positions on the Academy Board of Directors to the member-submitted questions.

Reminders

  • We want to hear from you! Don’t miss the opportunity to provide feedback on the Academy’s value, brand, and image. The 2012 Academy Member Poll closes COB today, July 20. A reminder email with a link to the confidential survey was sent on Tuesday, July 17, to Academy members who have not yet taken the survey. Look for an email from sbowman@thehaefergroup.com. Take the survey now!

  • Life: The NAIC has released for comment a draft revised Actuarial Guideline 38. Comments are due by August 3. Log in to read the full alert.

Website: New Postings

  • The Life Practice Council and Life Financial Soundness/Risk Management Committee submitted comment letters with suggested changes to the valuation manual and a recommended updating and review process.
  • Academy member Steve Schoonveld of the Federal Long-Term Care Task Force presented at the National Conference of Insurance Legislators Summer Meeting on options to reform the U.S. long-term care system.
  • The Joint Committee on Retiree Health submitted comments to the Actuarial Standards Board on the exposure draft of ASOP No. 6, Measuring Retiree Group Benefits Obligations and Determining Retiree Group Benefits Plan Costs or Contributions.

Upcoming Events

  • Join your colleagues at the 2012 American Academy of Actuaries Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Oct. 15! The Academy will transition presidential leadership from Dave Sandberg to Cecil Bykerk, announce winners of the annual awards, and hear from keynote speaker Stu Rothenberg.   • Mark your calendar now for this year’s P/C Effective Loss Reserve Opinion Seminar: Tools for the Appointed Actuary, Nov. 7–8 in Baltimore. Actuaries who write P/C loss reserve opinions and who want to stay up to date on regulations and standards applicable in drafting loss reserve opinions should plan to attend.
  • Are you a foreign actuary who intends to practice in the United States or an experienced FSA or career ASA who intends to change your practice area? Don’t miss the Nov. 12–15 Life and Health Qualifications Seminar—the primary source of instruction for actuaries who wish to be qualified to issue actuarial opinions for either the NAIC Life and A&H Annual Statement or the NAIC Health Annual Statement.
