Supreme Court Leaves Most of Affordable Care Act Intact

In a statement, the Academy called the court’s ruling a step toward ensuring that health insurance markets attract a broad cross section of risk, a cornerstone to any viable health system.

News from the Actuarial Standards Board

  • The July 2012 Boxscore is now available. Read about the ERM Risk Treatment exposure draft, Pension Risk discussion draft, Principles-Based Reserves discussion draft, and more.
  • The ASB released exposure draft ASOP Risk Treatment in Enterprise Risk Management for comment. Responses are due Sept. 10.

Website: New Postings

  • Life Practice Council Vice President Cande Olsen presented at an interim meeting of the NAIC Contingent Deferred Annuity (A) Working Group regarding the solvency and risk management issues associated with contingent annuities.
  • The Academy’s Flood Insurance Subcommittee issued a comment letter to Congressional leaders concerning H.R. 4348, a bill reforming the National Flood Insurance Program and reauthorizing it for five years.

  • More than 5,200 actuaries participated in this week’s Professionalism webinar to learn more about the ABCD’s request-for-guidance process. Speakers presented case studies and answered questions from the live audience. Members: Log in to download the slide presentation and audio recording.

Upcoming Events

  • Sept. 11–12: Life PBR—Test Drive the New VM-20. This two-day interactive seminar will allow attendees to work hands-on with the new reserving requirements in VM-20 and apply them to real-life examples. The seminar also will provide plenty of opportunity to discuss specific components of VM-20 with expert faculty.
