  • Plan to take the 2012 Academy Membership Survey. Watch your email Tuesday for your secure invitation to provide the Academy with valuable feedback by completing a brief, confidential member poll. The survey will be open through Friday, July 13.

Upcoming Events

  • Don’t miss next week’s webinar (July 11): Health Care Reform After The Supreme Court—An Actuarial Perspective. Speakers will offer an analysis of the Supreme Court’s June 28 decision, discuss next steps in the federal and state implementation process, and highlight future Academy activities aimed at the challenge of addressing long-term health costs. Actuaries from all practice areas are encouraged to attend.
  • Registration is open for the Academy’s Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Oct. 15. This year’s event is being held in conjunction with the Society of Actuaries annual meeting. If you are attending the SOA meeting, the Academy luncheon is included. Academy members who are not attending the SOA meeting may purchase a ticket for $70.
  • Work hands-on with the new reserving requirements in VM-20 and apply them to real-life examples at the Sept. 11–12 seminar: Life PBR—Test Drive the New VM-20.
  • Seats are limited for November’s 2012 Life and Health Qualifications Seminar. Register today to guarantee your place at the primary source of instruction for actuaries who wish to be qualified to issue actuarial opinions for either the NAIC Life and A&H Annual Statement or the NAIC Health Annual Statement.
  • Mark your calendar now for this year’s P/C Effective Loss Reserve Opinion seminar: Nov. 7–8 in Baltimore. Actuaries who write P/C loss reserve opinions and who want to stay up to date on regulations and standards applicable in drafting loss reserve opinions should plan to attend.

  • Pension Issues: President Obama is expected to sign pension funding stabilization legislation (H.R. 4348) today. The pension components are included in the transportation reauthorization bill that passed both houses of Congress on June 29. Log in to read the full alert.
  • Casualty Insurance: Both houses of Congress passed legislation reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program through 2017. The legislation also increases premiums for some subsidized policies. Log in to read the full alert.

  • The Group Long-Term Disability Work Group submitted a report outline to the NAIC’s Health Actuarial Task Force regarding a valuation proposal for a new group long-term disability table.
  • The Stop-Loss Work Group submitted comments to the Employee Benefits Security Administration on small employers’ use of stop-loss insurance and how this affects the market for fully insured small health coverage under the ACA.
  • The Pension Committee submitted comments to the SOA on a new set of mortality tables and projection scales for the valuation of uninsured pension plans.

  • In the wake of the Supreme Court’s health care ruling, two columnists referenced a 2009 Academy study showing that HSAs paired with high-deductible health plans deliver significant savings: Pacific Research Institute CEO Sally Pipes’ “What Now for Health Care Reform?” in the Orange County Register and Josh Archambault’s “The State is Ignoring Proven Care Options” in Healthcare News.
