Social Security reform options

News media briefing
Jan. 18, 2007

As the new Congress begins work and the president's State of the Union address approaches, the Academy held a timely briefing for reporters on a major political issue: Social Security reform.

The Jan. 18 briefing showcased the Academy’s new monograph, Social Security Reform Options, which takes a close look at various proposals — ranging from revenue increases to benefit cuts to private-sector investments — aimed at shoring up Social Security's finances.

At the briefing, Academy Senior Pension Fellow Ron Gebhardtsbauer explained the implications of the reform options, both for beneficiaries and for the program's finances.

Some of those options could gain momentum if legislators and/or the president decide to push for Social Security reform during this congressional session.

Gebhardtsbauer also noted that the Academy's Social Security Game has been redesigned. The Academy offers the interactive game on its website as an educational tool.
