Capitol Hill Briefing

June 11, 2007

Medicare and Social Security reform options were the focus of a two-session briefing for policymakers that the Academy held on Capitol Hill June 11, 2007.

Medicare options

During the first session, the Academy presented its new monograph on Medicare reform options. The paper, produced by the Academy's Medicare Steering Committee, is a compilation and overview of alternatives for public policymakers to consider in addressing Medicare's short-term and long-term financial problems.

The first session featured two speakers:

    — Cori Uccello, the Academy's senior health fellow
    — Thomas Wildsmith, chairperson of the Medicare Steering Committee

Social Security

The second session served as an introduction to a recent Academy monograph on Social Security reform options. The paper, which was produced by the Academy's Social Insurance Committee, discusses a broad range of choices for reform, and addresses their implications for beneficiaries and for Social Security's financial condition.

The second session featured three speakers (shown above, from left):

    — Eric Kleiber, a member of the Social Insurance Committee
    — Ron Gebhardtsbauer, the Academy's senior pension fellow
    — Kenneth Steiner, a member of the Social Insurance Committee
