Applying for membership
Actuaries who are interested in becoming Academy members are strongly urged to read the complete membership requirements before they submit an application. The requirements, which are published in the Yearbook and on the Academy website, include
- One or more of the following: Associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society, associateship in the Society of Actuaries, M.S.P.A. or F.S.P.A. in the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, membership in the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, enrolled actuary status under Title 3, Section C of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, fellowship in the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, fellowship in the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland, fellowship in the Institute of Actuaries in Great Britain, membership in the Colegio Nacional de Actuarios in Mexico, fellowship in the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Any other actuarial educational credentials must be approved by the Membership Committee and the Executive Committee.
- At least three years of full-time equivalent experience in responsible actuarial work, which is defined as work that has required knowledge and skill in solving practical actuarial problems in any of the following fields: life and health insurance involving individual policies, group insurance, social insurance, pensions, or property and liability insurance.
- A resident of the United States for at least three years, or a non-resident or new resident who meets the Academy's education requirements and can prove familiarity with U.S. laws and practices in his or her “actuarial practice area,” as defined in the Academy's Qualification Standards for Prescribed Statements of Actuarial Opinion.
- New members: Print out, complete, and mail the online application form. The completed form should be addressed to Rachel Rusch, American Academy of Actuaries, 1100 17th Street NW, Seventh Floor, Washington, DC 20036.
- Former members: Apply for reinstatement.
